The lemsteraak is a traditional Frisian sailing ship. The design comes from, how could it be otherwise, from Lemmer. The boat was developed from the Frisian fishing tackle and due to the low draft, suitable for the often shallow Frisian inland waterways. The first lemsteraak of which drawings are, was built in 1876 by the De Boer shipyard in Lemmer. The barge was originally intended as a fishing vessel on the Wadden Sea and the Zuiderzee. They mainly fished for herring. The barge was used for transporting and storing the fish. But due to its speed, the Lemsteraak was also used for the transport of live fish, mussel seed to Zeeland and mussels from Zeeland to Belgium. The well-to-do citizenry soon discovered that the lemsteraak was perfectly suited as a pleasure yacht. The bun disappeared and replaced by a cabin placed behind the mast, often with ornamental carvings and stained glass windows. In the run-up to the 21 century, competitive sailing with lemsteraken has received renewed interest. The existing ships were improved and new ships received better-performing hulls and rigging. Since 2002, the VA class organization has been established specifically for competition sailing with lemsteraken. The class is recognized by the Water Sports Association. Every racing ship has a time settlement factor. The aim of the TVF is to give every ship an equal chance of victory. Since 2000, the lemsteraken with the layout of the original fisherman are fully in focus in the competition field. The current racing ships are on average longer than those of the last century. The fisherman's large cockpit offers a competition crew of 10 man strong, lots of space and just as important, the center of gravity is lower than that of the yachts, so that the sail-carrying capacity is further increased. The most famous lemsteraak is by the way the De Groene Draeck of the royal family.
